Increase Garage Door Spring Tension

If the garage door isn t opening or closing properly then check the tension on the torsion springs for needed adjustments.

Increase garage door spring tension.

There are two torsion springs at each side of the garage door. Move to the outside of the garage. Lift the door and see how easy or hard it is. If you have a garage door opener uncouple the trolley from the door.

Pull the rope that s attached to your garage door opener. Simply disconnectthese two attachments and reattach the new spring in the same way. Open the door fully to relieve the tension on. Increase the spring tension if the door is too hard to lift.

To adjust the tension on the garage door opener spring simply unhook it from its current hole and move it to a hole farther up the door for less tension or farther down the door for more tension. The other end is attached toa pulley through which the garage door cable is threaded. To fix your garage door cables you ll want to release the tension of the springs by lifting the door. When the door is lowered you ll notice that the tension springs responsible for raising the door become taught.

Disconnect the door from the automatic opener using the disconnect cord. To decrease tension move the hook to a higher hole. Raise the door using the handle on the outside. If the tension is too high the door will not settle down all the way when you pull it down.

The torsion spring helps the garage door open and close easily. It will release the door opener from its drive chain. The springs are located at the top inside part of the garage door. Once your garage door is secured remove the spring hook from the track hanger which will allow you to move the hook and adjust the spring s tension.

You may wish to work on your garage door extension spring with your garage door up. Do the same process on both sides. If you need to increase the spring tension hook the spring onto a lower hole on the track hanger. Working on an open garage door without vice grips.

The old spring is attached at two points. If the door is hard to raise the tension at the hinge springs is too. Otherwise it will fall breaking all of your windows. If you do so you need to clamp vice grips on the door.
