If you use a roller backbrush immediately with a wide brush or pad to smooth the roller stipple.
How to paint 4 panel doors.
Begin by rolling paint on the flat panels.
Follow the right sequence when applying the paint.
The texture that rollers impart works well for walls and ceilings but isn t attractive on doors or wood trim.
Paint the door panels 1 2 3 and 4.
Brush on a light coat.
Paint all four edges of the door first.
Using a small roller to paint doors can greatly speed the process.
Paint the cross pieces.
It s better to have that happen before the faces are painted.
Paint the second face.
Start by painting the first panel 1 on the outside of the door use a small paint brush 25mm 1 inch to paint around the edges of the panel then ideally using a larger brush 50 60mm 2 2 inches paint the panel itself starting at the top first using vertical brush strokes then without reloading the brush spread the paint across the panel using horizontal strokes and finish off with light upward strokes.
Finish with the stiles the vertical sides that hold the panels in place.
Paint the edge first wiping off the underneath face of the door when finished.
Start by painting the edges of the door with either the brush or roller 2.
Using a paint roller paint the panels in the same direction as the grain of the wood or up and down if you imagine you were looking straight ahead at the door.
Open doors and windows if possible for ventilation.
Sticking with your small brush and starting with the top panel nearest to the hinge edge of the door and moving left to right as you move down the door paint around the inside edge of the panel making sure you don t miss anything.
Work quickly by rolling on the paint then use a brush to smooth out the paint and fill in the detailed areas around the flat panel.
Doing it in this order enables you to get a coat on the whole panel door in one sitting so you only have to have 2 3 painting sessions rather than 4 6 if you were doing one side at a time and waiting for it to dry in between.
Next paint the door panels.
Paint a flat door with a brush pad or roller with a 1 4 inch nap or foam sleeve.

When painting edges some paint inevitably slops onto the faces of the door.
I like to use a 1 1 2 brush to paint the recessed molding areas followed by a 4 roller for the flat surfaces in the middle.
Immediately after that get a brush and paint the shallow bits again going with the grain of the wood in a clockwise direction.
