How to manually close garage door with no power.
Here are the general steps to manually open a closed garage door from the inside when there s no power.
If your garage door shut off because of a power outage it may not start working automatically when the electricity comes back on and you may need to use another method.
To reset it begin by pulling the cord in the opposite direction.
More often than not when the power goes out your garage door is already in the closed position.
If you are in need of getting out of your garage door during a power outage you must first disconnect the garage door opener from the garage door.
This manual release handle disengages the trolley from the attachment point to the rail.
On most garage door openers there is a rope with a handle on the end usually red.
Pulling on this rope will put the garage into manual mode so if the door is up it might come crashing down.
This disengages the electric drive from the door and you can manually open and close it.
If you experience a lose of power while your door is in the up position please call your local overhead door company.
After the power is back on or you have found your garage door remote with your garage door down or shut you will want to pull down on the release cord this time towards the garage door.
Once the power is restored to your home close the garage door.
Do this by pushing upward on the release lever until you hear a slight click.
If your garage door has two different buttons that are used to open and close the garage door simply click.
The door must be completely closed in order to re connect the garage door opener to it correctly.
It should move smoothly and only require a little force to open and close.
You may also need to reset your garage door opener.
It should click in place.
Then you will want to either bring the garage door up manually until the garage door engages with the trolley system or you can use your garage door opener and this will engage the garage door back to automatic mode.
After the garage door is closed firmly press the garage door opener button.
To manually open most garage doors you simply pull a corded handle that is attached to the door.
A word of warning.
If you are having trouble reaching the lever you can use a broom handle or similar object to help you access it.
To allow the system to reset try unplugging your opener.
Once this happens you can open and close the door electronically.
If you are unable to lift the door manually due to extreme weight its possible you have a broken spring.
Manually move the garage door and return to down position step 2 will allow you to freely move the garage door to open and closed positions.
After you make sure that the garage door is closed completely find the overhead door opener trolley and locate the emergency cord.
Let the system rest for 30 seconds then plug the opener back into the socket.
If you pull the emergency release lever while the door is open you can cause the garage door to shut rapidly.
Allow the opener to operate without.
Once the lever is disengaged you should be able to open and close your garage door by hand.
